Even though you are painting rather than wearing green, you could still raise a bit of sponsorship if you wanted and details of the initiative can be found here.
Grab this opportunity to do something different and do some good at the same time.
Competition day began in glorious sunshine. With registration complete, order of play handed out and the opening ceremony over, play began, umpired by Steve Paton and yours truly, heavily supported by Pétanque England Coach and Kent National Player Steve Wells. The sight of all those teams competing in the newly developed playing area, surrounded by beautiful bluebell woods, was delightful.
Rivals included regulars as well as many players who had never competed before. Skill levels varied, but everyone enjoyed the games. It was great to see same-gender teams playing after BN petitioned the International Naturist Federation to allow this. It makes the sport truly inclusive!
This wasn’t a knockout competition but a Swiss-style round-robin, allowing everyone to play at least seven games over the two days. Saturday’s five-game play was followed by a relaxing French-themed naked music evening brilliantly DJ’d by one the residents.
Sunday started with clear blue sky and an ensemble of eager competitors. The morning sped by, and the results were in for the Final. The lanes were opened, and the large piste prepared, with all competitors seated around the playing court to watch the incredibly close game.
Carole and Karl took the much-deserved win and Broadlands Plate, and runners-up Susan and Edd received the Blackthorns Shield. Paul and Karen took third followed by Marrion and Phil in fourth. James and Helen were great sports and took home the wooden spoon.
Team BN won the Club Shield, with hosts Brocken Hurst in second place. Third place went to Springwood, followed by Suntreckers, Heritage, Arcadians, Broadlands and Blackthorns.
A big shout-out to all the volunteers from Brocken Hurst and BN whose hard work made this such a memorable event!
Feeling inspired to give Pétanque a go next year? Why not practice at one of the Sport Taster events arranged throughout the year. Visit the BN events website for more details

Although Naturism can be practised alone, for most people, Naturism is a very social activity. Shedding our clothes also causes us to be less defensive. Most Naturists say that they find people far more friendly and open at Naturist events than other gatherings. Sitting out in the sunshine with a drink helps us to relax so even if we don’t talk about specific problems, we do find ourselves being drawn into a supportive community. As we move into summer, there are a lot of opportunities to be involved in social nudity in the months ahead, and many of them are listed on our calendar. People often worry about going to an event if they don’t have somebody to go with because there is nothing more lonely than a crowd if people don’t talk to you. Those who have taken the step and gone regardless will tell you they needn’t have worried as the community goes out of its way to welcome newcomers and ensure that people don’t feel isolated.
Therefore, if you are looking for a chance to make friends and spend time with others in a supportive environment, try a Naturist event. You will be surprised how welcoming it is and how good it makes you feel.
The theme of Mental Health Awareness Week 2024 is “Movement”. Movement and exercise are crucial for our mental health, but so many of us struggle to move enough. Exercise has been a central feature of Naturism since the philosophy first existed. Indeed, the word “gymnasium” derives from the Ancient Greek word “gymnos” meaning naked or nude. These days there are many ways to exercise naked. Many naked swims are held every week around the country, and you can find many opportunities on the Great British Skinning Dip website if you want to give it a try. Many other sports take place at clubs and events and include badminton, volleyball, rounders, squash, petanque, and miniten. If you want to try naked sport for the first time there are lots of opportunities at our summer festivals such as Nudefest and EveryBody. Finally, naked hiking or “free hiking” is the cheapest thing you can possibly do and British Naturism members will be organising many walks through the summer.
Naturism can have a positive effect and make your life that little bit better, we hope you give it a try.
Bristol Naked Swim are an established Naturist swim group that meets every Wednesday evening at Jubilee swimming pool in South Bristol. New member Collette Brydon is running these sessions as she cares deeply about inviting more people into nudist spaces safely and comfortably.
Collette has often found herself to be the only woman in Naturist spaces and wondered how it would be possible for more women and underrepresented groups to join her. She hopes that these new swim sessions will give more people the opportunity to enjoy the liberating experience of swimming naked, whatever their body type.
Female lifeguards will be on duty. Don’t worry if you are not a great swimmer; there is usually as much chatting in the pool at a Naturist swim as there is swimming.

We'll talk through all the events that BN is hosting, bring you as up to date as we can with the activity programmes, tell you about the venues - which includes a new one for 2024 - and, for those who have not been to any of them before (or even any Naturist event) what to expect. We'll have the usual Q&A session too so that you can dig even deeper. Hopefully, there will also be time to have a look forward to events being planned, but not yet announced...
Join the session on the night over in the BN shop
One member had four separate visits from Gloucestershire police officers regarding standing just outside his house to smoke while naked (not a recommended activity but that is on the smoking aspect, not the nudity). Apparently, a school bus briefly passes the end of the road, and this appears to have been the catalyst for the visits.
Despite each officer, on speaking to our BN Member, agreeing that there was no unlawful activity taking place, he continued to receive further visits which caused some upset.
Having asked BN for advice a letter was sent to the police from our hotline solicitor. This had the expected result that no further investigation was being undertaken, no more interviews were necessary and with the police making reference in their reply to the College of Policing Guidance note as the reason.
The second case also had a satisfactory outcome. A BN Member was out running in the countryside in the manner we are all used to and prefer when the weather is warm. He was detained, arrested, interviewed and bailed by Surrey Police. Again, following liaison with BN’s legal hotline solicitor and with the added support of a comprehensive letter to the officers involved from our in-house legal team, the police released him from bail stating no further investigation would be taking place. Although a traumatic experience for the individual the support system worked in the end.
Donations to the BN legal fund are always welcome!
Nudefest: June 17-23
Attention! The ever-popular bash returns to Thorney Lakes in Somerset, but this year it’s in June, not July, to avoid clashing with Glastonbury. Nudefest fuses an amazing lineup of daytime activities with nightly entertainment across multiple venues. There’s always something to do – and at the heart of it all is our fantastic BN community.

Windermere: July 12-14
Once again, British Naturism will take over the beautiful Fell Foot Wood for a back-to-basics camping experience. The wood is two minutes away from the National Trust’s Fell Foot Park and the banks of Lake Windermere. The event focuses on nature, wellness and natural healing. Best of all, there’s a naked fell walk and skinny dips in local tarns!

EveryBody Festival: August 15-19
“We do stuff – mainly Naked!” is the theme of this event, which encourages like-minded adults to get together and explore social nudity in a non-sexual, non-judgemental environment. Want to experience the wonderful world of Naturism? Make your way to Poole, Dorset and give EveryBody a try!

60th Jamboree: September 12-16
Come and celebrate 60 years of British Naturism at Baskerville Hall (yes, that one) near Hay-on-Wye, Powys. We’ve got four nights of live entertainment, daytime activities, swimming pool, sauna and lots more. Baskerville Hall overlooks the Wye Valley at the edge of the Brecon Beacons and Black Mountain National Park, and is a stone’s throw away from Hay-on-Wye, famous for its used book shops and Festival of Literature and Art. Accommodation options include camping for tents, motorhomes and caravans, a variety of hotel rooms and single-sex and shared dorm rooms.
shop.bn.org.uk/pages/jamboree
The eagle-eyed may have noticed that in 2024 a revised version has been published, so it is worth looking at what has changed. In short, nothing. The College of Policing have made a couple of minor adjustments to the wording to clarify terminology, but those are minor and the meanings and guidance remain the same as they ever were.
So why are we reporting this lack of change? Crucially, re-publication of the guidance re-affirms the commitment of Police Forces to the guidance formulated in 2018. It hasn’t been forgotten in the intervening years and re-publishing makes it clear that there is no intention to move away from those principles. The frequent discussions between British Naturism and different Forces, challenging actions when there are errors and assisting Officers making good decisions, keeps the topic on the Police agenda and means that Naturists can be confident going about their daily lives.
The link to the College of Policing guidance has been updated on our policing page, which also contains links to similar guidance for the Home Nations and can be found here.

We should pause a moment to consider the change that Simon’s appointment represents. Simon was one of several people to formally express interest in the role, reflecting the growing enthusiasm of members for making significant contributions through volunteering. Perhaps more significant is the nature of the role as that reflects the appetite across our membership to prioritise, equality, diversity and, as we move forward, equity for all people. We increasingly see Naturists who are determined to make Naturism available to everybody and make the world a better place for all, not just within the confines of the organisation. That in itself is something we should celebrate and work to advance.
Simon has a remarkable portfolio of achievements; he has laid down markers that have advanced equality and diversity throughout his career. Now retired, his achievements when a serving police officer, included founding and subsequently chairing the Gay Police Association, holding seats on the Cornwall Race Equality Council, Dor Kemmyn (multi-faith organisation) and the Diversity Network for Cornwall, and chairing the latter to lead the transition into the Cornwall Equality and Diversity Network as part of Inclusion Cornwall. Eventually Simon became part of the Devon and Cornwall Constabulary corporate Equality and Diversity Directorate responsible for informing and guiding force policy and procedure in line with the Equality Act 2010 including the Public Sector Equality Duty and The Human Rights Act 1998.
Outside of his professional work, Simon was one of the founders of LGBTQ Youth Cornwall and, following retirement, he accepted the Chair of The Intercom Trust, through which he gained a seat on the Cornwall Hate Crime Strategic Group, a group that he now chairs. This is a remarkable CV and British Naturism are lucky to gain a strategist of such experience across the protected characteristics.
With Simon in position we can be confident that British Naturism’s commitment to achieving equity for all will reach new heights, and Simon’s experience will also be invaluable as we campaign for Naturist rights, especially in areas such as Hate Crime or Stirring Up Offences.
I’m sure you will join me in welcoming Simon to the role and, rest assured, the other enquirers are not forgotten. After all, many hands make light work.
In each episode, we delve into insightful conversations, exploring various aspects of Naturism through the lens of womens' experiences. Whether you are a seasoned Naturist, new to the way of life or just intrigued, we aim to educate and inspire. We highlight the experiences, challenges, and triumphs of women in Naturism. Promoting body acceptance and self love, we explore how women across the planet have shed their clothes and freed up their minds, leading them toward a more fulfilling life in all areas; one that no longer keeps them restricted - emotionally, mentally, physically, and in all other ways.
Helen interviews Sue May, a passionate advocate of Naturism and BN volunteer from Hampshire. Sue was a single Naturist woman for some time, and met her current partner, Andrew, through mutual Naturist friends. Indeed, it wasn't until their first offical date that they saw each other dressed for the first time. Sue is a keen swimmer and has represented the UK as part of the team at the International Naturist swimming gala, where the team came third in 2023.

They’ll be taking part in British Naturism’s Naked Heart Walks, experiencing the exhilaration of being nude in the great outdoors, boosting their mental and physical health, reducing their stress - and having a lot of fun.
To make the decision to give a naked walk a try, the walks will be clothing-optional, though we’re sure some clothed walkers will be stripped off by the end.
An Ipsos poll commissioned by British Naturism in 2022, revealed (pun intended) that almost 7 million Britons describe themselves as ‘Naturists’ or ‘Nudists’.
There are currently six Naked Heart Walks, and tickets are on sale now:
Powderham Castle - Devon - Saturday 18 May
Leonardslee Gardens - W. Sussex - Saturday 15 June
Himalayan Gardens - Yorkshire - Saturday 29 June
Cwm Weeg Gardens - Powys - Saturday 6 July
Bishampton - Worcester - Sunday 21 July
Dorothy Clive Gardens - Shropshire - Wednesday 14 August
Find details of all Naked Heart Walks
And we’re not done yet! We’re asking people up and down the country to find more venues. Can’t see a walk in your neck of the woods? Suggest a venue! We’ll be happy to help.
Andrew Welch, National spokesman for British Naturism, said:
“Taboos around nudity are eroding and the health and well-being benefits of going naked are more widely understood, with more and more people wanting to get the exhilarating feelings for themselves. We encourage anyone to come and give it a go - and raise much needed funds for our charity partner, British Heart Foundation.
Ben Bishop, BHF Fundraising Manager, said:
“There are lots of ways to support the BHF and, thanks to British Naturism, these now include taking your clothes off and enjoying the great outdoors. We hope that thousands of people will join one of the many walks being held around the country. In doing so, they’ll be helping us fund scientists to discover the new treatments and cures that can save and improve lives.”
We have people willing to be interviewed/photographed and stock photos for media use.
Media attendance at the walks is possible, with advance notice.

It reinforces what an Ipsos poll commissioned by British Naturism in 2022, revealed (pun intended): that almost 7 million Britons describe themselves as ‘Naturists’ or ‘Nudists’.
Even this early in the season, we already have over 500 skinny dips taking place. See below for a list of all the counties playing host across the year.
In addition, on the 1st of June, we are endorsing the Great British Synchronised Skinny Dip, with a number of venues participating with the intention of recording a significant number of Britons swimming nude on the same day.
And we’re not done yet! We’re asking people up and down the country to find more venues. Can’t see a skinny dip in your neck of the woods? Host one! We’ll be happy to help.

Both facilities are seeking support as they prepare to open. For the more-developed British Naturism: Sunfolk that means equipping the buildings now in place and you can help by purchasing an item from the wedding list and Central Sun Club are seeking financial help with basic facilities through gofundme.
This means that there are opportunities coming at both ends of the UK, and easy ways to help.

“It was a fantastic evening with record numbers attending,” says BN Sports Director Ian Munt. A big shout-out to “the 21 volunteers who supported us during the evening and made the event run so well.”
This year marked the launch of a new activity: the Festival of Sport. The sports hall at the venue opened for badminton and pickleball. I’m a pickleballer myself, but this was the first time I’d tried it naked. It was such fun that I had to tell my regular (textile) p-ball group about it, to bemused smiles. Some of the swimmers wandered in between races as well, and everyone seemed to enjoy the games.
The Gala always attracts a nice mix of ages, from teens and even younger people up to competitors in their 80s – and a good number of women. These races are serious business: they lead to the creation of a Team BN that will compete at the 25-27 October international competition in Le Havre, France. There are spaces for 42 competitors.
But the evening is also just good fun, with lots of chatter and laughter and the lovely friendly environment Naturism encourages.
“Swimming is a great way to improve physical and mental health, so the gala is something we have always worked to advance,” says Mark Bass. “The widespread appeal of skinny dipping in particular was reflected in the large attendance, which has been growing year-on-year. So many people talk about how events like this help them feel at home in the Naturist community and improve their sense of wellbeing that being involved is really uplifting.”
Whether you wish to discuss club events - such as open days - sports events, Great British Skinny Dips and Naked Heart Walks, swimsand walks in the North West region - the choice is yours! We will discuss the success of the new Withington Swim and any others that you choose to mention. There will be no set Agenda, but we will attempt to cover all the events with a Q&A opportunity.

All members of British Naturism and of British Naturism member clubs are welcome to play in doubles teams, of any combination of genders. Don’t worry if you are on your own, we’ll find someone for you to form a team with. Everyone will get to play at least five games.
Supporters and visitors are also welcome – we need lots of noise, so please come along and support your team and Club! There is so much for you to do over the bank holiday weekend in between the games. There will be entertainment each evening including open mike, music, comedy, body-painting disco and quiz night. The Naturist Foundation site has large covered and heated pool, sauna, miniten courts, table tennis and woodland walks.
You’ll be well served for food and drink with a licensed bar all weekend, a café, food van and tea and coffee on tap for free for all during the competition. There will also be a communal BBQ available for everyone’s use.
Naturist Foundation Trustee Steve Paton said:
‘Preparations for BN’s 2024 National Pétanque Tournament are nearing completion, in spite of the weather! We’ve been lucky to receive guidance from a representative from the Kent Pétanque Association. Brocken Hurst’s pétanque terrain has been completely rebuilt importing over 90 tons of type 1, dust and chippings sourced from a local quarry near Maidstone. We are told we now have the second largest pétanque terrain in Kent! Bookings have been excellent, we are already at 21 teams and will cut off at 26 teams. 13 pistes (lanes) will be available for play and we are looking forward to a great tournament and a weekend of partying in true Brocken Hurst style! Feel free to come along and watch even if you are not playing.’
Check out the BN events website for further details, including costs for competitors, campers and visitors and how to book.
"Naturism is a way of life in harmony with nature characterised by the practice of communal nudity with the intention of encouraging self-respect, respect for others and for the environment".
To reflect on this synergy, we will use The Forum Live Debate next week to discuss how Naturism supports environmental issues, how we might exert our own influence for the benefit of the planet, and whether there are steps we can take as Naturists or concerns we could consider to minimise any negative impact.
So if you are interested in natural living or the welfare of the planet, do join us on the 29th April through the BN shop.
We will sail aboard the all weather Seren-Y-Bae for a 3 hour naked cruise around Cardiff Bay taking in the evening views before gently cruising along either The River Taff or The River Ely.
The evening cruise will include an excellent buffet, music and a dance floor and then who knows what other fun activities: those who have been to the Cardiff Coffee Afternoon will have some kind of idea!! There is also a bar (card only).
Numbers are restricted to 45, so don't wait until last minute if you want to enjoy this wonderful evening.
