News and articles about BN and the wonderful world of Naturism
Join host Helen Berriman, BN's Women's Officer, for a new podcast from British Naturism, dedicated to celebrating and empowering women in the Naturist community. Our podcast is created by women for women, although we warmly invite men to join us and listen as well.
In each episode, we delve into insightful conversations, exploring various aspects of Naturism through the lens of womens' experiences. Whether you are a seasoned Naturist, new to the way of life or just intrigued, we aim to educate and inspire. We highlight the experiences, challenges, and triumphs of women in Naturism. Promoting body acceptance and self love, we explore how women across the planet have shed their clothes and freed up their minds, leading them toward a more fulfilling life in all areas; one that no longer keeps them restricted - emotionally, mentally, physically, and in all other ways.
The first episode is with  Linda Weber - Linda is an ambassador for Naturism.  She is a Director with AANR, a Governor with the B.E.A.C.H.E.S Foundation and has many other roles.  We talk about our journeys into Naturism, some of the challenges we face but most of all the joy that Naturism brings.
The BN Women in Focus podcast is available on the following platforms and the first episode will be available on Saturday 2nd December. There is a trailer to listen to in the meantime, to whet your appetite...

Last weekend, British Naturism returned to the NEC, Birmingham, to join the Mind Body Spirit Festival.  The Mind Body Spirit Festival brings together inspirational, motivational speakers, musicians, artists, and vendors from around the globe.  The event showcases spirituality and holistic approaches to wellbeing, including yoga, crystal healing, meditation, healthy living, card and rune reading, and sound and aromatherapy.  Much of the focus is on living naturally and connecting to nature, making the connection to Naturism seamless.
Visitors generally immerse themselves in the festival, meaning that conversations are often deep and build relationships, which is very different from most trade shows.  Many visitors are looking to add something to their lives and in conversation discover that social nudity may be an option.  Visitors are predominantly younger adults and female, demonstrating that there is an appetite in those groups that we need to meet.
Martha and Roy, with their personal commitments to sustainability and fitness led the British Naturism team and forged relationships with both guests and other exhibitors.  Those connections to other groups with aspirations sympathetic to British Naturism are as valuable as spreading the word directly because they open opportunities for sharing between groups.  The long-term aim is that rather than seeing a Naturist event or a yoga retreat, there are just events where all aspects are seen and welcome so that Naturism becomes truly mainstream.
Hopefully we will return next year, playing an even larger role.
We like to bring you news stories of forthcoming events - it spreads the word, encourages more people to book and shows just how vibrant the Naturist scene is in the UK. However - I'm happy to say - there are far too many to promote them all individually and so here is a complete list of all the events happening over just the next couple of weeks. Enjoy! And don't forget that we are always looking for reports on great gatherings for the magazine and elsewhere...

It's almost exactly two years since we heard from Sönke from Get Naked Germany (GNG), hearing how the group started and how they work alongside German Naturist Federation, DFK.
This time, we'll also have the pleasure of meeting Ralf, chairman of GNG who runs a group of naturist bikers who are mostly accepted by other people they meet during our tours. Ralf came across Naturism during a depression a few years ago and believes that it is very important to talk about the positive effects of being naked to other people, helping heal a lot of wounds.
Sönke and Ralf will also speak about GNGs application to get Naturism acknowledged as intangible cultural heritage and their contribution  to the EuNat Meeting in Bonn in March of this year.

We're pleased to be returning to exhibit at the NEC in Birmingham to spread the word about Naturism and its many benefits. The show runs from tomorrow (17 Nov) until Sunday. BN members Martha and Roy will be on hand to answer all the questions, and inspire people about clothes-free living.
The Mind Body Spirit Festival features inspirational, motivational speakers, musicians, artists and performers from across the globe. As well as a whole host of exhibitors presenting health and wellbeing products, organic food, therapies, jewellery, holistic retreats, divinations, supplements and healing.
Around 10,000 people are expected to attend and, according to the organisers, 89% of them are female.
The festival is open to the general public and if you use the code EXHNECFAMILY25' you will get a discount of 25% on your ticket.
We're hosting a ladies only clothing-optional afternoon at a residential property in Foxton, Cambridge on Saturday 9th December at 2pm.
Come along for an opportunity for women to get together to support Cancer research UK.  There will be an afternoon tea buffet, prosecco, aromatherapy talk, cake sale, jewellery sale, raffle, hot tub with massages available for a further cost.
Find out more including booking details in the BN shop - and don't forget the British Naturism Members' ladies' only holiday to Fuerteventura next April!

This event is open to all and therefore a brilliant opportunity to invite someone you know to try a Naturist event. Get them excited in advance by showing them our annual guide!

Over Halloween, more than 90 guests attend SANER’s annual event ‘The Gathering’ in the historic city of Stirling at the King Robert hotel, writes Danny Callaghan. It’s on the site of the Battle of Bannockburn (1314), a date most Scots remember when we had a historic victory of the Auld Enemy the English. However this time no skirmishes were reported and our English guests returned home tired, happy but unscathed.
The event saw ghosts, ghouls and witches and pumpkins galore.  A real scary sight. The witches were hunted down along the corridors and public areas and I am pleased to report that none were burnt. A tradition at The Gathering is to have a hunt, - it has been haggis and rugby balls before, but witches this time. It is a great way for guests to explore the hotel, clutching the answer sheets - fun to watch too.
Guests listened to a talk about the Battle of Bannockburn by the battle site’s resident expert Dr Callum Watson, followed by an Elvis tribute act who stood in at the last minute due to our Abba group having had a sudden bereavement. Elvis had everyone singing along and the evening was completed by our resident DJ Brian Mathews, then off to bed (or bar) before another full day.
Tuesday started with a lovely breakfast and many guests headed out to explore Historic Stirling, its castle and other attractions. Others relaxed or took part in Mike’s spooky quiz. As evening approached it was time for our guests to get appropriately dressed in best Halloween body and face painting and witches hats and with broomsticks, there were even a few walking pumpkins seen. The evening was rounded off with one of the hotel’s regular acts Roberta Childs performing tributes to such as Diana Ross, Tina Turner and many other, leaving us all with sore throats singing along and sore feet with the dancing.  Some lasted to dance the evening away with our disco maestro Brian.
After a morning worship led by Quin and we visited Stirling Old Town Jail for a creepy naked lock-up. Most inmates were released in time for dinner, although some were left in solitary confinement with only bread and water. Our evening saw some ladies in big hats for the Witches Nag Racing.  With our uniform nobody lost their shirts though there were a few empty wallets. Thanks to Moss once again.
The hotel and their staff were fantastic taking us in their stride and  I am sure like me  more than a few guests headed home couple kilos heavier after the excellent meals. Our generous guests left the staff tip-box overflowing.
As is our norm at the Gathering we support a local charity, this time the Strathcarron Hospice with a raffle and also proceeds from the horse race and generous donations from guests we raised the fantastic sum of over £500.
A big thanks to all our volunteers for without them there would be no Gathering and also to all our guests new and old for joining us for another successful event.
Haste ye Back!

Danny Callaghan

Next Monday, 13 November, at 7:30 pm, BN's Women's Officer, Helen Berriman together with a team of women in Naturism will discuss some of the issues surrounding female participation and what men can do to help, including Naturist etiquette, how to discuss Naturism with spouses and partners, providing examples of best practice, and be available to answer any questions men may have.  With special guest Linda Weber from AANR and others.  A must watch/listen for all!
Join the session on the night over in the BN shop
Consent: Stopping the Misuse of Intimate Images
Among the many proposed bills outlined in the King’s speech yesterday was the indication of plans to deal with the creation of intimate images without consent.  The Online Safety Act has already criminalised revenge porn and upskirting but has left many circumstances where women in particular suffer from the ease of digital image creation that we live with today.
The subject is of interest to Naturists due to the amount to time we spend naked and how frequently we appear naked in photos, but far more important are the underlying principles of Naturism.  Naturism is founded on respect for one another.  Last year a study by UN Women UK found that 97% of women aged 18-24 have suffered sexual harassment while 28,201 incidents of private sexual images being disclosed without consent were reported to the police between 2015 and 2021.  Such shocking statistics reflect an unsatisfactory level of respect for women and demand attention.  The work of British Naturism promotes the right of people to freedom of choice and expression.  That might be the choice to live naked, but it might also be the choice to not be seen naked.  The central issue here is consent, the decisions about our own bodies should be our own to make.  The creation or distribution of intimate images without consent can be as harmful as any other sexual offences.
It will come as no surprise that the Law Commission approached British Naturism for input as early as 2020 when the “Taking, making and sharing intimate images without consent” project was being launched.  Our expertise in respectful handling of nudity was of value and we were pleased to see the recommendations of the final report reflect our own recommendations very closely.  In particular the Law Commission found our input on how we define and establish consent very helpful as they were keen to deal with exploitation without accidentally criminalising legitimate behaviour, such as consensual nude recreation.  To achieve boundaries that will be applicable in practice, the recommendations align with existing legislation such as consent being considered in the same terms as consent for other sexual activity and the limits of intimate linked to a reasonable expectation of privacy as well as the nature of the image.
The passage of such recommendations into law will be an asset to Naturists.  In the UK we see a male-heavy gender imbalance in the Naturist community because although people are treated with respect at Naturist events, with many women reporting that they feel at their safest, the abuse, harassment, and objectification that women experience elsewhere makes it difficult for them to imagine that it would be any different if they are naked and they miss out on a wholly-positive experience. If as a society we move towards a situation where sexual exploitation is not tolerated, we will all enjoy much greater freedom to live as we chose.  Our commitment to helping people reclaim ownership of their bodies continues and this is one step along the way.  Therefore, we are proud of the small contribution we made and hope to see progress towards an attitude of respect for all.
Mark Bass, President of British Naturism
It’s #TrusteesWeek!  The time of year when we celebrate the amazing contribution made by trustees for their charities, not-for-profit and voluntary organisations and recognise the difference they make.
Trustees’ Week is an annual event held during November (this year 6-10 November 2023) to showcase the great work people do as trustees, directors and committee members and provide opportunities for everyone to get involved and make a difference.  This year’s theme is ‘Many voices. Working together. With purpose’.  It’s a time to celebrate the achievements of trustees across the UK and to thank them for the time, commitment, and effort they bring to our charities, not-for-profit and voluntary organisations.
Charities, not-for-profit and voluntary organisations make a huge and positive impact on society and are dedicated to an enormous variety of good causes.  This year we celebrate the individual talents, viewpoints and experiences each trustee brings to their board and their collective decision making and how diversity can help make a trustee-led organisation stronger.

Many voices. Working together. With purpose
A recent face-to-face BN Executive Committee meeting with the new team on board was held in Solihull.  It was indeed an opportunity to work together and to hear the many voices present, as well as contributions voiced on the forum by members in response to the recent call for ideas about campaigning ideas.  There was a clear agenda with purpose, with key decisions made about:
Budget 2024 5 Year Vision Objectives and Delivery Plan 2024 Campaigns 2024 60th Anniversary Events 2023/2024 YBN Strategy
Volunteering as a Director/EC Member can be very rewarding and puts you at the heart of the organisation’s governance and decision making ..… you are literally in the room where it happens.

If you want to contribute to change for something you believe in – get engaged.
I enjoy being involved, being able to influence the organisation and to ensure my views are heard, even if not always accepted.  It also keeps me very busy!
I want to be part of a team willing to actively promote the benefits of naturism; to help normalise nudity to the wider public; to achieve acceptance that there is nothing unusual about the naked body.  To educate!
I like being a member of the EC because I can help shape the future and I enjoy being part of a team.

Getting On Board – Turning Passion into Purpose

Applications are welcomed from individuals of all ages and backgrounds.  British Naturism supports the Women on Boards initiative and welcomes applications from women and others to bring fresh experience and perspectives to the governance of BN.

This clothing-optional event is organised by the Naturist Outreach Group and has a theme of Black Tie, Diamonds and Tiaras and will be hosted by Liverpool Sun and Air Society on Saturday 11th November. It is open to all Naturist and non-Naturist partners.

Guests can expect an evening of gourmet dining with a four course dinner, after which you can dance the night away to a fantastic live band. For those with energy to spare, the dancing will continue to the sounds of the house disco. All this for just £25 per head.

To book, you need to get your skates on and email Yvonne at ya.tui@hotmail.co.uk or call on 0764336332. Book your overnight stay at info@lsas.org.uk

This is the latest in a string of events organised by “The North and West Naturist Outreach Group”. The Group was set up by active naturists Ron O’Hare and Simon Dawson to promote and organise Naturist activities and events across BN's NW region. The group now has many members from neighbouring areas.

Group members organise lots of activities, often collaborating with landed clubs and other established groups. To date, the Outreach Group have organised Naturist walks, beach days, events at open air Lidos, open water swims, meet-ups, barbecues and group visits to most landed clubs in the NW Region, where they have been warmly welcomed and always invited back. The group keep in touch via WhatsApp and monthly online meetings.

There can be precious few moments in life to beat the pride of being selected to represent your country at sport. To be able to do it nude is the icing on the cake. This weekend a team of swimmers from British Naturism competed against 11 European nations at the International Naturist Federation swimming gala in the Serbian capital of Belgrade, with Naturists from Canada and the US also in attendance.
Despite base camp, a modern four star hotel, being in the centre of the city, the glistening Danube visible from bedrooms on higher floors, a conference suite was made available for us to eat and let our hair down without clothes.
A quiz (in English, fortunately) kicked off the event, with people from different countries mixing to form teams. Next morning 100-plus swimmers and supporters trooped crocodile-style to the Olympic-sized pool (pictured), on the banks of the river, only a short walk away.
Thanks to NOS, the Serbian federation, the competition was very well run with a huge number of races in backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly,  and freestyle with team and family relays, the whole thing overseen by professional judges and time keepers. BN sports officer Ian Munt, worked hard to make sure the yellow swim-capped UK competitors were in place for each race and motivating the team. Very many of our swimmers came away with medals which were awarded at the poolside podium amidst cheers and applause.
Lunch was served - also poolside - and not a little impressive that it was hot  - a pork filet in a cream sauce with roasted vegetables.
Gala over, people chilled out in the hotel sauna or explored Belgrade, especially the castle, before attending the announcement of placings and a (naked) buffet dinner. The night ended with another fantastic, euphoric, life-affirming naked disco - a new experience for some of the teams.
The BN team were naturally delighted to pick up a trophy for 3rd place, though disappointed to miss beating the Italians by a mere three points!
Can we do better? Of course - but we need more competitors. Ours was a team of 15, but 42 are permitted and points are awarded for every finisher. The Germans dominated in the pool but also brought a large team. Medals are awarded in categories by age and a quartet of young Germans won gold in EVERY race as they were alone in their age group. The same applied in the older age brackets. You don’t have to be an Olympic standard swimmer, if you can swim 50 metres you’re in. Team members do pay for their own travel but the accommodation - which included breakfast and dinner - is subsidised. It’s likely that next year’s gala will be in Northern France and therefore easier (and maybe cheaper) to attend. How do you apply? Come and swim in the BN swimming gala next Spring! Details coming soon.
Look out for pictures of the event on the gallery later this week.

Naked Heart Walks is a BN outreach initiative aimed at providing opportunities for nude recreation to all. I admit, unashamedly, that it gives us great pleasure when ‘New to Naturism’ members of the public join us with the intention of fundraising for our charity British Heart Foundation, and then find themselves thoroughly inspired by the freedom of walking naked and feeling the fresh air all over their bodies. I often hear ‘’Can I be included in the photo?’’, such is their newly discovered enthusiasm to be walking and socialising completely clothes free.
Of course the fundraising aspect and showing our social conscience is a key objective and we have had much success during the summer months, raising around £20,000 for the charity including £1200 raised by Suntreckers and a donation from the owners of the walk venue at Fonthill Estate of £395, also gift-aided.
One of the first events of the season was the enormously successful NHW at Powderham Castle (pictured), where everyone enjoyed the breathtaking Devon scenery surrounding the venue. We completed another Naked Heart Walk from Lancashire to Cumbria across Morecambe Bay in June with many newbies taking part in the 7.5 mile long walk. There were also successful fundraising walks at Leonardslee and RSPB Rainham Marshes in the LASER region, and the Fonthill Estate event, again in the South West, plus Adlington Gardens and the amazing dual NHW/GBSD event at Bishampton - the latter two belonging to the North West  region. It was great to achieve a groundbreaking cross-border coordination when the NW region joined forces with the YEM region to create a joint NHW at Himalayan Gardens near Ripon - thus attracting attendees from both the red and white rose counties. Thanks to everyone who arranged, attended and supported these fantastic events.
What began as a What's App group to search for more venues then developed  into a Zoom group, meeting fortnightly to arrange more events and share information on and assistance with Naked Heart Walks and Great British Skinny Dips. Our contact at BHF is also part of it.
It really worked and we (almost) tripled the number of events from 2022. We would like to increase the number of charity walks in 2024, so the NHW Team will be hard at it this winter making countless approaches to possible new venues. We believe that 15 NHW events can be achieved in 2024, so if you have a venue in mind that could be approached  then please feel free to suggest by making contact with us.
Best of all, we can already bring you details of some Naked Heart Walks already arranged for next year! Make a note in your diary. Tickets will be on sale soon - keep an eye on the website and ezine for details and for more dates/locations as they are announced!

Naked Heart Walks for 2024
May 19th - Powderham Castle, Devon
June 15th - Leonardslee Gardens, West Sussex
June 22nd - Himalayan Garden and Sculpture Park, Yorkshire
July 21st  - Bishampton, Worcestershire

Our swimming team sets off tomorrow for Belgrade, Serbia and the annual INF swimming gala. Our team of 15 swimmers will be accompanied by some supporters, all cheering the team on against competitors from other nations. Last year we finished second - we'll all be willing the team to take the top spot in 2023!
The weekend, hosted by NOS, the Serbian Naturist federation, will also include opportunities for teams and supporters to socialise including a dinner and disco on the Saturday night. The itinerary issued Serbian President Goran makes it clear that nudity is permissible (expected?) at both the wet and dry events - apparently competitors can even strip off on the coach from the airport too...

The promotion and protection of Naturism are core objectives of British Naturism and one of the major reasons for our existence.  We recently put out a call to members for prospective campaign ideas and received many great suggestions.  These ideas have now been distilled into six campaign proposals for 2024 that tackle different aspects of Naturism in different ways.  At the The Debate next week on The Forum Live we will talk through those ideas and more importantly discuss how they can be fine-tuned and moved forwards.  More important than finding the concept is finding the volunteers to deliver them.  Therefore, we will be looking for people keen to be involved or to lead some of these ideas and hope that the discussion will move things forward.

So if you are keen to be involved in advancing acceptance and opportunities to participate in Naturism, do join us on Monday and be part of the discussion.

Just released on the pan-European channel, Arte is a 90 minute documentary (divided into part 1 and part 2) subtitled 'A History of Nudism'.
The programme does explore the history but it also looks at philosophy and contemporary attitudes and speaks to a variety of people including photographers, artists, nude event hosts and, of course, Naturists. Professor Keon West makes a number of appearances and references some of the work we did with him.
There are subtitles and also no censorship of bodies - just as it should be.
Here's the link to part 1, and part 2. You can also watch on TV

Catalonian Naturists are campaigning to defend long established Naturist beaches from a “textile invasion”. They have written to the Catalan government asking for a meeting to discuss “the discrimination that nudists face on the beaches of Catalonia” and various ideas for ensuring the public recognise and respect Naturist areas. Their suggestions include clear signage and a public awareness campaign.
An increasing number of online travel guides are recommending these beautiful hidden beaches but fail to mention their long standing ties to Naturism. One campaigner, Segimon Rovira, told the Guardian, “Previously, people would arrive at a nude beach and either leave or strip off. Now they stay and keep their swimsuits on. It’s a lack of respect. There are nudists who have stopped going to some beaches because they are too crowded and there are too many people wearing swimsuits and they feel uncomfortable.”
But its not just the numbers. There are reports of giggling, prolonged stares and even disparaging remarks guaranteed to deter many seasoned Naturists and certainly anyone wanting to try it for the first time. As Rovira says, “Starting to practise naturism when you’re surrounded by people in clothing is very complicated, that’s why we think it’s important to have nudist spaces where the majority of people are nude so that people are encouraged to try it.”
As part of their campaign, the group have produced a video depicting how, in an ideal World, non-Naturists, lured to one of these idyllic hidden gems, might find themselves converted. It’s a lovely film - do have a look at it!
naturisme.cat/2023/08/10/video-el-paradis/
The more that people know about Naturism, the better things will be for us all. Many people don’t know that they know a Naturist and assume that we are still that fringe minority on the edges of society. We understand the individual fears, possible complications and desire for an easy life, but we want to encourage you to help Naturism in the UK to become normal.
It’s daunting, but our 'Just One Person' campaign encourages you not to stress. Talk to someone about your Naturism and that experience may give you the courage to tell a lot more. People have found it easy to pick someone who would not be judgemental. A good place to start is to talk in a low-key way about a skinny dip on holiday or Naturist beach you ‘found’. Many people get a positive or sympathetic reaction. Feedback suggests that you will feel better having told someone – it may actually be a relief!
As Naturists we are in danger of killing this natural life choice by fear. We need to talk about it for it to survive and be prepared to acknowledge the pursuit that enriches our lives.

Here are some Just One Person experiences from our members as posted on the BN forum … we look forward to reading yours!

I've told 4 friends since joining about my visits to Ashdene. None were shocked, all were interested and there were lots of questions about "what do you do if..." . Whether they decide to ever join me is uncertain, but they certainly weren't judgemental. I will keep on gradually informing people I trust with my new found freedom, hopefully I can convert at least one in the next year.

I have recently told a friend of mine - I thought it would go down like a lead balloon, but it turns out he is waaaaay more open about things than I thought and has shown real genuine interest in my Naturist adventures. He hasn’t said he would join me yet as he is too body shy and doesn’t feel comfortable about himself but has already gone on to tell me he is now enjoying sleeping naked.

Well I think more than one person knows now as I was a marshal for the World Naked Bike Ride in London at the weekend and put a Facebook post up but forgot to change the privacy settings. I’ve had a few interesting comments back!

I was on my way in to band practice last night and was helping our Musical Director in with one of his bags and we were talking about the hot weather and how it was too hot to wear anything. He said that it had been too hot for him to go out during the day and that he had only dressed when he came out to the practice, and I said same here and added that we were Naturists. He said he had often thought of trying it. Perhaps the conversation will continue.

Last week I was mixing cement for a building project in our garden and a Duke of Edinburgh award group walked past the gate. They seemed totally unfazed by the fact that I wasn't wearing clothes and it seemed totally natural as it was so hot. The route they had taken led to a dead end so a short while later they walked back, clearly lost, and asked me for directions which I gave them. There was no mention of my lack of attire and they thanked me for my help.

I share quite a lot on Facebook about my Naturist activities. This week I put on an event linked to the Petersfield Lido Skinny Dip and one of my online friends “liked it” and marked himself “interested”. Tonight he messaged me said that he was interested in finding out about Naturism, for him and in general. I gladly sent him the link to the online version of the BN Guide to Naturism which he’s going to read and come back to me with any questions. Hopefully he may decide to come along to the skinny dip or give another event a go.

Telling other people usually has positive outcomes. My closest friends were inspired by knowing of my Naturism and its positive benefits for me and decided to initiate a naked swimming session on their three generational holiday. It turned out well for them and will have been of great benefit for the youngsters.

I retired my software business in December 2019. Today I had a catchup with one of my clients with whom I had enjoyed a 20 year+ working relationship. During the conversation, we happened on the topic of what various people get up to, so I took the opportunity to show her my BN membership card.  There followed one of the most positive conversations I've had in a while. She was thrilled and "inspired". We talked about how I take part in Naturism, body positivity, how it feels to be naked. She was very interested (not to the point of wanting to give it a go … yet) and asked a lot of questions. She couldn't have responded any better really. I'm so pleased I told her.

I use a BN towel to dry off with after a shower at the gym.  I'm one of the few there who will go naked from locker to shower and back.  One chap looked at my towel and commented today "that must be why you are so comfortable naked”.

And sometimes it works the other way round…

Well, that was a surprise!  I’ve just been on the receiving end of a “Just One Person”. Chatting at a lunch in London, we were comparing notes on places to stay on the Atlantic coast south of Bordeaux, when my companion said “My wife and I are thinking of going to a place called Arna. Have you heard of it?” The rest of the lunch consisted of swapping stories of beaches that we had been to - a new connection made!

A friend who I hadn’t seen for a number of years, very casually mentioned at a wedding something along the lines of “I don’t get dressed at home”.
