Regular visitors to this website will know that last week was Nudefest. But if we're going to share the joy of Naturism with a wider audience, we can't rely on people already visiting the British Naturism website. We need to tell our story where people are already consuming their news and entertainment.
This year, our younger members did exactly that.
Nudefest has always attracted media interest, but what journalists encountered this year was something rather different. Twenty-year-old Rae stepped forward with a clear vision: the many Young British Naturists (YBN) attending had stories to tell, and she was determined they would be heard.
Meeting journalists as they arrived, Rae and the other younger attendees directed the conversations from the outset. Rather than focusing simply on the novelty of a Naturist festival, they spoke about the things that matter most to them: respect, acceptance, body confidence, friendship, and the freedom to be themselves without judgement.
Those values are shared by Naturists of every generation. However, today's young people are growing up in a world where so much of life is documented, scrutinised and judged through social media. Finding a space where appearance doesn't define you and everyone is accepted for who they are has a profound impact, making the Naturist experience especially meaningful.
The journalists' response exceeded all expectations. The original intention to capture a couple of short soundbites was transformed into a 30-minute feature that dominated BBC Radio's Saturday morning programme, giving a mainstream audience an authentic insight into modern Naturism. The BBC also produced a television news segment, helping introduce even more people to the welcoming and inclusive atmosphere of Nudefest. Perhaps the most telling feature of the journalists’ response is that the video clip features nudity, a bold step for the BBC and representative of trust and credibility that our young members projected.
We are incredibly proud of all our younger members who spoke so confidently and honestly about their experiences. By sharing their stories, they helped challenge misconceptions and demonstrated the positive difference Naturism can make in people's lives.
Well done to Rae and everyone involved, you were outstanding.
