Symbols matter.
We all know that one of the things we value most as members is the sense of community, support and friendship we find in British Naturism. At an official event, there is a relaxed atmosphere and a sense of trust because we know that the people around us share our views and values.
But what happens in other settings? How do we recognise fellow members who might welcome a cheerful hello? How do we find others from our community? And, in the worst-case scenario, how do we know who we could turn to if we needed help?
On public beaches in particular, it can be difficult to distinguish between long-term Naturists, people who are simply discovering Naturism and those whose intentions may be less positive. It’s unfortunate that the latter exist, but it is a reality we have to acknowledge.
So, what can we do about it?
One simple answer is visibility.
We’ve just released the new British Naturism umbrella. Broad, bright orange and emblazoned with “British Naturism”, it is designed to be difficult to miss.
Of course, it has a practical purpose too. It can provide a little shelter from wind or glaring sun and, should the famously unpredictable British weather turn against you, it will keep you dry. It is an umbrella rather than a parasol, so it isn’t designed to provide extensive beach shade, but on a British beach it may well prove useful in more ways than one.
But its real purpose is as a symbol.
It provides an easy way of saying: “I am a proud member of British Naturism.”
That simple message could help members recognise one another, making it easier to strike up a conversation and perhaps turn a solitary afternoon on the beach into time spent with friends. It also gives British Naturism a visible presence in public spaces and communicates something important about our community: that we value respect, friendship and consideration for others.
Finding ways to improve safety for Naturists is a crucial but challenging task. We simply cannot have wardens or organised groups present at every location. But we can create a culture where members know that they are not alone.
A British Naturism umbrella doesn’t ask its owner to take responsibility for anyone else. It doesn’t require a commitment, a rota or any intervention. It simply sends a message. Sometimes, that message alone can make a difference.
And of course, when you’re nowhere near a beach, it remains a perfectly good umbrella. Whether you’re walking around town, heading to an event or simply caught in a downpour, you can stay dry while still proudly signalling your connection to British Naturism.
The more visible we are, the more normal Naturism becomes. And the more normal Naturism becomes, the easier it is for people to understand, accept and embrace it.
