We have all seen the dreadful news reports of uncontrolled fires in the UK and abroad following an exceptionally hot and dry summer. Yesterday, one such fire broke out close to Diogenes Sun Club. Thankfully, this time there was some good news too: Diogenes was able to play a vital role in helping the fire service tackle the blaze.

“On August 12th, members of Diogenes were enjoying another tranquil and sun-soaked day in the heatwave when fire broke out at the farm next door to the club. As there are no hydrants nearby, Diogenes has long had an arrangement – never used until now – to enable the fire service to use our swimming pool as a water source.
As members moved their vehicles away from the area nearest the fire, the club was soon swarming with firefighters, who swiftly set up a command post on our drive and brought fire appliances on site. A large pump was rigged up to start draining our outdoor pool, with the indoor pool earmarked as a second source if required – a total of some 80,000 gallons, apparently! A large water carrier was also on site and, in total, there were nine appliances from Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire Fire Services.
The fire was soon brought under control, though we understand that a number of farm animals could sadly not be saved. Our hearts go out to the farmer, who has suffered not only the loss of animals but property damage as well.
We were pleased to be able to support the emergency services and our local community – and no doubt to be a talking point in local fire station mess rooms!”
