Long-time Naturists know that nudity in the UK is lawful and that we do not need special permission or designated spaces to enjoy our lifestyle. Yet misconceptions persist and, from time to time, local authorities attempt to impose restrictions that have no basis in law.
This has been an ongoing issue at Fraisthorpe Beach in East Yorkshire. Naturists have enjoyed the beach for over 40 years, but signs claiming that Naturism is prohibited have periodically appeared, discouraging people from using the area.
Rather than accept the situation, local Naturist John Avery decided to act. Working with the British Naturism campaigns team, John contacted the Crown Estate, which manages the beach. He highlighted the long history of Naturist use, explained the legal position of Naturism in the UK and asked the Estate to ensure that local authorities were not acting contrary to either the law or its own principles.
The result? The sign quietly disappeared.
While there has been no formal commitment to supporting Naturism and the issue could arise again, this is a great example of how local, constructive campaigning can make a real difference. Calmly explaining our position, engaging respectfully with those in authority and offering to be part of the solution is often remarkably effective.
