Since Chapeltown Pool has closed a new South Yorkshire swim has been arranged (the first swim having been on 22nd May) at King Edward's Swimming Pool, Sheffield. It is an unusual pool, being 30m long with two shallow ends, somewhat deeper in the middle but still easy to stand. Our impression is that the pool is warmer than Chapeltown.
The swim is at:-
King Edward's Swimming Pool,
Clarkhouse Road
Sheffield
S10 2LB
For details of the pool please see their website ( http://kesp.co.uk/ )
There is plenty of street parking, free on Sundays. Outside of school hours we can also park for free in the school staff car park adjacent ( see Google Map below ). There are two entrances: Glossop Road is normally open but there is also an entrance on Newbould Lane.
For those arriving by public transport the pool is very close to the Royal Hallamshire Hospital and is served by the 120 bus.
If you are hungry/thirsty there is a Wetherspoon's ( The Francis Newton ) virtually opposite.
For location see Google Maps - the pool is near the centre:-
https://goo.gl/maps/G5FibCReNcB2
The swims will normally take place on the third Sunday of the month, from 1530 to 1715 ( all persons to leave by 1725 ). Cost will be £5 ( BN/INF, cards to be shown ) or £7 otherwise. The rise in price reflects the increased cost of pool hire. The pool does not have lockers and swimmers are advised to bring a bag for their clothes/possessions and to take them poolside as the secure cloakroom will not be staffed.
For further details please contact Andrew Calow ( membersupportdv@bn.org.uk, 0114 2215579 ). or visit http://yem.bn.org.uk/swims.html
Further swims in Sheffield are on October 23rd, November 20th, December 18th. Swims in 2017 will be announced later..

STRIP THE BEACH - World’s Largest Naked Beach Clean
Community Black Rock Beach / Brighton Nudist Beach, Brighton, East Sussex
On Sunday 18th September, Brighton environmentalists are invited to take off their clothes and join a naked beach clean-up campaign. Strip The Beach, organised by the World Cetacean Alliance, aims to strip the beach of rubbish, and get into the record books.
Organisers intend to bring together a Guinness World Record number of naked people for the event.
Beach clean-ups are conducted around the world with the aim of removing man-made debris from the coastline and recycling or disposing of the collected waste accordingly. Brighton has the UK's only “Green” constituency and is located within the Brighton and Lewes Downs UNESCO Biosphere Region. However, following council funding cuts for street and beach cleaning, marine litter and derelict fishing equipment continues to wash up and remain on our shores.
Organisers of the naked beach clean aim to raise awareness of the problem of marine plastics, sea litter and discarded fishing equipment ("ghost nets"). Strip The Beach will take place on Brighton's historic Black Rock naturist beach (Black Rock Station, Madeira Dr, Brighton, BN2 1FY). This is a less populated stretch of Brighton’s seafront, and an area where more flotsam and jetsam accumulates due to prevailing currents and the presence of Brighton Marina.
Russell Arnott, event organiser and Outreach Officer at WhaleFest: Incredible Oceans, says, “At present, 8 million tons of plastic is added to our oceans every year. I can’t even begin to imagine what that much plastic looks like; the number is too big for the human mind to get a handle on. Plastic can take hundreds of years to break down naturally so in the meantime it continues to wash up on beaches all over the world harming wildlife and damaging the food chain. We are hoping that this event will capture people’s imaginations and raise awareness of issues surrounding ocean plastic”.
The event is happening in conjunction with the Marine Conservation Society’s Great British Beach Clean weekend (16th to 19th September -www.mcsuk.org/beachwatch/greatbritishbeachclean ), and is supported by WhaleFest, Incredible Oceans, Brighton Naked Bike Ride and Brighton and Hove City Council. Organisers aim to connect with other local and national marine organisations and charities, bringing them together for a common cause.
Participation is free, and will take place whatever the weather
