What does Naturism mean when you experience the world from a wheelchair?
For one Naturist, the answer is surprisingly complex. Naturism has always represented freedom: freedom from clothing, from social expectations and, perhaps most importantly, from some of the self-consciousness that can come with living in a world that often places expectations on how our bodies should look and function.
But for a wheelchair user, reaching that freedom can sometimes require navigating a few more obstacles first.
Many Naturist venues are wonderfully situated in natural surroundings, but uneven ground, gravel, sand, slopes and inaccessible facilities can turn a relaxing day out into a carefully planned exercise. And accessibility is about much more than whether a wheelchair can physically get through a doorway. The position of the door, the space needed to manoeuvre, the design of toilets and showers, and the ability to use facilities independently can all make a significant difference.
There is also another, less visible, dimension to accessibility: how it feels to enter a Naturist environment when your disability is immediately apparent.
Being unclothed can make anyone feel vulnerable. For a wheelchair user, there can be an additional concern that people will notice the wheelchair before they notice the person. Yet Naturism can also offer something remarkably liberating. Without clothes to signify status, appearance or conformity, the wheelchair can gradually become simply another part of the person sitting in it.
For this Naturist, that experience has brought not only practical challenges but also confidence, comfort and a renewed sense of belonging.
His story also demonstrates why listening to disabled members matters. At his own club, being consulted about accessibility has made a practical difference and has reinforced something equally important: the feeling that he belongs and that his experience is valued.
Disability takes many forms, and no single person's experience can represent everyone. But this personal account raises important questions for all of us about what it really means for Naturism to be for everybody.
