    Location and the Beach

Blissful seclusion, endless soft sands and fabulous views make Ross Back Sands a lovely place to relax. It’s not an official beach but there is enough space to allow respectful bare bathing, with dunes and sandy hollows for privacy. Even on a sunny weekend there may only be a few visitors.

The beach its self is quite clean and is made up of hard sand near the sea, soft sand in the middle, then the dunes with plenty of hollows to keep any wind at bay.

Holy Island is at the north end with Bamburgh Castle at the south. Virtually all the textiles tend to stay to the south with the odd few near the entrance we use. On some days there is a haar (sea mist) in the morning, this clears until late in the afternoon when you can see it returning. Enjoy the peace and tranquillity.

    Directions

Ross is not marked on some maps, but it’s fairly easy to find. On the A1, about half a mile north of the B1342 turning to Bamburgh, look carefully for a right turn to Ross, down a minor road. Follow the road and signs to Ross, where you can park on the road outside this little hamlet. Continue along the road by foot until it becomes a driveway and then a path leading through fields and grassy dunes to the sea. The post code for Ross hamlet is NE70 7EN.

Try to park sensibly, walk about just over half a mile to the beach and turn left, walk for about a further 800 yards to reach the dunes.
