Location and the Beach
Brian Craigie writes to tell us about Crakaig Beach, Loth, Sutherland, Scotland. He says, "I have always had warm and happy memories of holidays in Scotland, particularly in Sutherland where the beaches are stunning, so when I first heard about a possible naturist beach in Sutherland, I decided to find out more about it.
The landowner is Michael Dudgeon, and he has declared part of the beach as naturist. While not a naturist himself, Michael is keen to permit naturism on the designated section of the beach, which is situated a few miles north of Brora on the north-east coast of Scotland. There is a campsite for both caravans and tents, with a relaxed attitude. Whilst the campsite itself is normally non-naturist, it opens up to naturists for one week, around World Naturist Day, in early June. When I visited in June, 2006, the weather was stunning. Pleasingly, midges were not a problem. The sea was warm enough for swimming in, and indeed provided a pleasant relief from the heat of the day.
As far as facilities go, there are basic toilets and showers, but Brora village provides all the necessary shops and the people are very friendly."
